The significant challenges that early-stage companies in Kenya currently face in accessing appropriate financing, as well as tailored management assistance to develop and scale their businesses and achieve commercial viability, are what KVC is set up to address! These challenges are particularly acute for the clean-tech asset class, as this asset class is new, and its track record is unproven; and this is the space is which we are.

Our intent is to provide appropriately tailored capital and technical support to innovative start-up and early- stage businesses in the clean-tech sector, with a view to enabling them to develop and scale. To achieve the desired impact, we prioritize those entrepreneurs whose business models show potential for appreciable impact at a sector level. Our ultimate goal is the attainment of significant social, environmental and economic returns.

With this intent in mind, we have recently re-organized ourselves in order to strengthen our management and governance structures.  The Board is already in place and we are now looking for a Chief Executive Officer who will be charged with the delivery of the organization’s mandate.

Job Summary
As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will provide strategic leadership for the company.  Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with KCV management team, you will establish long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies that are aimed at attaining growth, operational efficiency and the desired social, environmental and economic returns. Our investment thesis will provide a good foundation for the achievement of this.

Key Responsibilities
You will be looked upon by the Board and the staff of KCV as the developer of solutions to business challenges and as such, you will be charged with:
  • Providing leadership and management guidance in the development, communication and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes aimed at delivering KCV’s mission and the attainment/surpass the capital, profitability, cash flow and business goals and objectives;
  • Developing and executing a fundraising strategy to ensure that the fund grows in value from the current USD 4 million;
  • Collaborating with the management team in the development and implementation of plans for operational infrastructure, systems and processes designed to accommodate the growth objectives of the company;
  • Creating, motivating and leading a high-performance management team (not currently in place). You will provide mentoring as a cornerstone to the career development program and ensure that the organizations core values are put into practice;
  • Managing the image of the company, which will include but not limited to engaging with and successfully managing relationships with the Board, Investment Committee, investors and other stakeholders, you will act as the lead “relationship officer” through direct contact with every client, partner, investor and donor.
  • Fostering a success-oriented, accountable environment within the company.
Requirements:
You will be an inherent leader with a proven record of managing high performing teams at a strategic level.  Of particular importance to us is your commitment, drive and self-motivation, as well as a passion for ‘clean tech’ and for improving livelihoods.  If you like challenges, building and growing a pioneering fund will be yours.

In addition, you will have the following:
  • A proven entrepreneurial mind-set/approach and enterprise development skills;
  • Experience with strategy development, implementation and project management;
  • A strong network in the local and international entrepreneurial finance community including funding agencies, investors and the donor world, as well as the ability to cultivate opportunities with co and follow-on investors;
  • Experience of building effective relationships with decision makers (CEO’s and Directors);
  • Significant local knowledge of the Kenyan early-stage investing and entrepreneurial space and experience of working with entrepreneurs, negotiating with them, mentoring and coaching them on how to grow businesses;
  • Experience with or ability to develop, adapt and/or improve the investment model, and to select investments with solid growth potential;
  • Early stage investment management and structuring skills – an appropriate understanding, exposure and interest in financing and investing in small and growing businesses, with a solid awareness of VC type investment approaches and structure; and
  • The ability to identify, recruit and lead a small investment team and other professionals.
Qualifications 
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, with at least 5 in a management/leadership capacity in an investment fund preferably an early stage investment fund;
  • General management experience, at the helm of a similar impact fund or private equity fund is desirable;
  • Previous demonstrable experience in fundraising for an investment fund;
  • Post Graduate Degree in Business related areas is desirable;
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, accounting, business or any other discipline strong in analytical orientation.

Job Summary

As a member of the management team, the Enterprise Development Manager will contribute to the overall vision and direction of KCV. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Enterprise Development Manager will conduct needs assessment to facilitate the provision of customized training and capacity development on all the commercial aspects of the KCV investee companies to enable them to achieve the agreed implementation plans.

Key Responsibilities

More specifically, you will have the following responsibilities:
  • Carry out a diagnostic to determine the technical assistance needs of investee companies from time to time and prepare a technical assistance work plan for each investee company and monitor its implementation;
  • Provide advice to investee companies on matters relating to finance, general management, marketing, procurement and other areas of operations so as to meet agreed objectives;
  • Assist investee companies with preparation of all required material and, review all material produced by and advise appropriate action based upon the quality thereof;
  • Prepare and present training programs for investee companies as and when required, identify appropriate outsourced training service providers and manage intervention and key outputs; 
  • Source, recruit, establish and co-ordinate a pool of skill and sector specific expertise for the investee companies;
  • Build up and co-ordinate a database of individual mentors with appropriate skills and resources for the investee companies, manage their work and report on their interactions with businesses; and
  • Follow up with investee companies to ensure they submit monthly documentation and input require and meet regularly with each investee company to assess progress towards objectives.

Requirements.

The Enterprise Development Manager will be a self-assured, results oriented individual with a passion for bringing about change in the society. You will also have:
  • At least 7 years professional working experience, 3 of which should be in a managerial role in a similar capacity ideally in agribusiness, water and clean energy enterprises;
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, business administration and/or any related technical fields in agribusiness, renewable energy and water sectors is an added advantage;
  • Deep technical knowledge in SME development as demonstrated by successful work experience;
  • Demonstrable experience in portfolio management and project management;
  • Strong commercial acumen with proven abilities in capacity building and training;
  • Strong communication, administrative and analytical skills.

Director - Client Services

KCIC 
Organization Background

The Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) provides holistic, country-driven support to accelerate the development, deployment and transfer of locally relevant climate and clean energy technologies. The KCIC provides incubation, capacity building services and financing to Kenyan entrepreneurs and new ventures that are developing innovative solutions in energy, water and agribusiness to address climate change challenges.

Job Summary

Reporting to the CEO, The Director – Client Services is responsible for directing and managing the outreach and services provision of KCIC to entrepreneurs and start-ups with a special focus on business advisory services, research, advocacy, and collaborative partnerships. This is expected to result in improved access to information and to facilitate the interaction between businesses and resource providers, including but not limited to access to capital.

Responsibilities

More specifically, you will have the following responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute strategy for outreach, hunting, attracting and onboarding deserving and qualified innovative entrepreneurs, and start-ups;
  • Develop, execute and own an operational and engagement strategy for the entire community including donors, startups, investors, corporates, mentors, advisors, and domain experts;
  • Plan, coordinate and execute the annual budget processes for the department;
  • Designing and managing Incubation and Acceleration programs;
  • Manage the day- to- day interaction with the Incubatees and provide support to entrepreneurs across ideation, acceleration, investment and scale-up stage;
  • Provide continued strategic guidance to entrepreneurs in areas such as business modeling, sales, and marketing, financing, fundraising, overall strategy, operations etc.;
  • Build capacity of the entrepreneurs in developing bankable business plans and access to short, medium, and long-term financing;
  • Strengthen the Alumni Clients community and identify potential areas of collaboration;
  • Drive performance management and target-based staff evaluations and create and foster an environment that encourages productive feedback and communication for the team
  • Review existing processes and ensure development of the most efficient mechanism for client satisfaction;
  • Enforce adherence to KCIC policies and procedures by the Client Services team; and
  • Prepare relevant reports to management, KCIC board, donors and other stakeholders.

Requirements

The Director – Client Services should be visionary, results-oriented with an affinity for impact investing and a commercial mindset. You should also have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business related courses
  • Master’s degree in economics, finance, business administration and/or any related technical fields is an added advantage;
  • Professional qualifications in CPA, ACCA and CFA desired;
  • Over 5 years’ experience in business development services, impact or venture capital investing, strategic or management consulting, or in providing technical business assistance ideally from working with startup, early stage entrepreneurs or investors;
  • Experience in the critical analysis of business, investment plans and financial statements;
  • Experience working in the energy, water and agribusiness sectors is an added advantage;
  • Good interpersonal skills with an ability to work with a diverse mix of professionals;
  • Ability to lead in an environment of constant change, solve problems and make critical decisions;
  • Ability to identify talent and gaps within the team and come up with a system to build the talent and fill the gap within the team; and
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
